Laser Repair for Jewellery: Revolutionising the Art of Jewellery Restoration
In the world of jewellery, precision and perfection are paramount. Over time, pieces of jewellery may suffer damage or wear, whether it’s a crack in a gemstone, a broken clasp, or a worn-down ring. Traditionally, jewellery repairs were carried out through methods like soldering, which could sometimes risk damaging the piece further. However, with the advent of laser technology, a new era in jewellery repair has emerged. Laser repair has revolutionised the way jewellers can restore and enhance fine jewellery, providing a more efficient, precise, and less invasive solution to common jewellery problems.

Laser Jewellery Repairs - Laser Ring Repairs
Laser jewellery repair is a modern and advanced technique used to repair various types of jewellery using laser technology. This method offers several benefits, such as precision, minimal heat impact, and the ability to work on delicate and intricate pieces.
Laser Repair is particularly useful for repairing intricate pieces, restoring delicate gemstone settings, fixing claws, and addressing metal fatigue issues.
It is less invasive compared to traditional soldering methods, which can minimize the risk of damaging sensitive gemstones or causing discolouration.
However, it's worth noting that laser repair requires specialist equipment and skills,
This is performed by our experienced jewellery goldsmith and technicians who are trained in using laser technology for jewellery repairs.

Benefits of Laser Repair
1. Precision and Accuracy: One of the most significant advantages of laser repair is its unparalleled precision. Lasers allow jewellers to work with extreme accuracy, enabling them to repair even the most delicate parts of a piece without affecting surrounding areas. This precision is particularly beneficial when working with small stones, intricate settings, or fine details.
2. Minimizes Heat Damage: Traditional soldering can involve high levels of heat, which may cause neighbouring stones or delicate parts of a piece to be damaged. Laser repair minimizes heat exposure to the surrounding metal and stones, ensuring that only the damaged area is affected. This reduces the risk of discolouration, melting, or warping, making laser technology ideal for sensitive materials.
3. Faster Turnaround: Laser technology speeds up the repair process. The intense focus of the laser allows for rapid and effective repairs, which means that customers can often have their jewellery restored in a much shorter time frame than with traditional methods.
4. Minimal Distortion: Laser repair preserves the integrity of the original design by causing minimal distortion to the surrounding area. Traditional repair methods may alter the shape of a ring or necklace, but lasers can work in a way that maintains the original aesthetics of the piece.
5. Versatility: Laser repairs can be used for a wide variety of jewellery issues, including resizing rings, fixing broken chains, re-setting gemstones, restoring worn areas, and even repairing prongs. This versatility allows jewellers to tackle many different types of repairs that would have been more difficult with traditional tools.
6. Less Invasive: Laser technology is less invasive than traditional methods, as it can focus on very small areas without the need for significant alterations to the piece. This makes it an excellent option for high-value jewellery, antiques, or heirloom pieces that require careful handling.

The laser welding process forms stronger joints than soldering. This makes the appearance of the jewellery as close to the original as possible.

Laser soldering is a technique where a ~30-50 W laser is used to melt and solder an electrical connection joint. Diode laser systems based on semiconductor junctions are used for this purpose. Wavelengths are typically 808 nm through 980 nm. The beam is delivered via an optical fibre to the workpiece, with fibre diameters 800 µm and smaller. Since the beam out of the end of the fibre purges rapidly, lenses are used to create a suitable spot size on the workpiece at a suitable working distance. A wire feeder is used to supply solder. Both lead-tin and silver-tin material can be soldered. Process recipes will differ depending on the alloy composition. For soldering 44-pin chip carriers to a board using soldering preforms, power levels were on the order of 10 Watts and solder times approximately 1 second. Low power levels can lead to incomplete wetting and the formation of voids, both of which can weaken the joint.
